As a company rooted in making a difference in people’s lives, BELFOR is proud to recognize others doing the same with their work and recently had the opportunity to do so at the James Beard Foundation’s 2018 Awards Gala.
The James Beard Foundation strives to praise, support, and commend chefs and leaders in the food industry for “making America's food culture more delicious, diverse, and sustainable for everyone.” The awards presented at the annual James Beard Awards Gala are among the highest honors in the food world. This year, BELFOR CEO Sheldon Yellen was honored to present the 2018 James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year award to Chef José Andrés. Sheldon presented the award on behalf of HOODZ International, a BELFOR Company and the leader in commercial kitchen cleaning, maintenance, code compliance and fire prevention solutions.
Chef Andrés was named 2018’s Humanitarian of the Year because of his collective work with World Central Kitchen to support over 3 million people in Puerto Rico by serving meals to the communities affected by Hurricane Maria. World Central Kitchen is the global non-profit organization Andrés founded in 2010 with the mission of “creating smart solutions to hunger and poverty.”
The theme of the 2018 James Beard Awards was “RISE,” in honor of celebrating “the collective spirit of our community and the power of food.” The goal was to illustrate how the food community is committed to rising to today’s challenges and making the world a better place for everyone. The James Beard Foundation encouraged participation in the cause using an “I rise for” sign and sharing what moves them.
Together, BELFOR and HOODZ were honored to sponsor the 2018 James Beard Foundation Humanitarian of the Year award and to support Chef Andrés and the important work he and World Central Kitchen continue to do to help fight against hunger and poverty worldwide.
