BELFOR Abbotsford Helps Derby Mom pointer

BELFOR Abbotsford donated renovation services to make modifications to the home of a local mother and roller derby member who lost a leg, toes and fingers during a life and death struggle with a deadly bacterial infection.

BELFOR General Manager Scott Williams found out about the Abbotsford Mom from one of his carpenters, Brandon Wright. Brandon’s wife skated with her and knew of her medical plight. BELFOR Abbotsford will provide remodeling help to make the home wheelchair friendly, and also donated money and various items for the January fundraiser.

“This is an opportunity to make a difference and give back,” Williams said. BELFOR Abbotsford has experience with giving back; they donated restoration services to a family with a sick child last year.

Insurancewest Magazine November 2012 Features Good Samaritan: BELFOR’s Kelly Makinson Springs Into Action pointer

When Kelly Makinson of BELFOR Vancouver, attended the RIMS Canada conference, she had no idea that her quick aid and cooperation would help a man in serious distress. The following is an excerpt from Insurancewest, November 2012:

Darren Franco, advertising manager at Insurancewest was joined by conference exhibitor Kelly Makinson, who was standing near the man when he "keeled over." She managed to break his fall. Makinson, manager of business development in the Vancouver office of BELFOR Property Restoration, has had more recent first aid training. "It's funny how everything comes back to you," she says.

As a crowd gathered, they loosened the man's necktie and belt, rolled him on his side to prevent him from choking, and put Makinson's handbag under his head. Franco slipped a leather business card holder between the man's teeth to stop him from biting his tongue.“The ambulance arrived in about five minutes,” Makinson says.”At the time it seemed like forever.”
